FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Ethernet Cards

Where can I get an Ethernet card?

Ethernet cards can be purchased at almost any computer retailer, or from your Trans-Video.Net installation specialist.

Ethernet Card Installation

3com, LinkSys, RealTek, Netgear, etc. (All PC Card Ethernet installs)

Windows 95/98/2000/ME will work immediately with plug-and-play PCI-type Ethernet cards.

Operating Systems have dynamic tables built in called a registry. Introducing a new card into a PC machine without first setting the card's Bus Address and Interrupt (IRQ) to available setting can cost you hours of work. Windows NT or Windows NT workstation are very sensitive to this and can, according to Microsoft "place you in a situation that requires you to 'Reinstall the OS and then all of the customers application software and settings'". There is a high probability you can expect an install problem from a machine that has loads devices, like sound..etc, built on to its motherboard. Note: New Compaq and Dell machines.

Here are directions for proper installation of a 3Com Etherlink 3 card. The procedure will be similar for all Ethernet cards.

  1. Shut down the machine properly, and install the network card in its slot.
  2. For Windows 98 and later, power on the machine and follow the instructions as it loads drivers and asks you to restart the system. That's all that's needed.
  3. For Windows 95, power on the machine and enter Windows. It will begin to add new hardware, and ask for a diskette.
  4. Place the diskette in the machine. Windows will find the drivers.
  5. If will probably ask for other information (cannot find a file), which is tricky. Type in "C:\WINDOWS\" and click okay. If it still has trouble, try "C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\". Then try "C:\INSTALL\" or "C:\SETUP". Then try "A:\". If none of these work, contact Trans-Video.Net for an installer.
