SUMMARY OF SERVICES

Trans-Video.Net offers these services (see Pricing for specific costs, and details of use in Terms of Service):

  • Broadband, unrestricted access to the Internet via cable modem for a monthly fee.
  • Installation of cable entry, ethernet card, and software for a single fee.
  • Cable modem for monthly rental fee or outright purchase.
  • Default email box with account signup name, plus four additional boxes at no charge.
  • 10MB of personal web space (to be implemented in early 2001).
  • 8am-8pm technical support, with emergency hours.
  • Additional computers, for a nominal monthly fee.

Trans-Video.Net does not offer:

  • News service (Usenet). We recommend Onlynews.com for $12.95 per month.
  • FTP service, except for personal web space access.

Trans-Video.Net does not permit:

  • Servers of any kind available to other Internet users, including web, ftp, mail, irc, file-sharing, or other Internet-accessible servers.

Why don't you offer Usenet news service?

People who use news service are loyal to it (the creator of this website is one of them). But times have changed since Usenet was first available. Bandwidth to carry the more than 60,000 newsgroups (including huge binary files of music, photographs, and programs) would entirely consume Trans-Video.Net's Internet connection and lock it out to regular customers!

We also don't provide free access to external news services because of the cost to provide news "streams." The services require that 20% of Trans-Video.Net's customer base have access to news at one time, a cost that would have to be shared by raising rates to everyone for a service that very few now use with the advent of web-based bulletin boards and chat sites.

We recommend Onlynews.com for fast and unrestricted news access ($12.95 per month) or the free web-based news service, Deja.com.

Why can't I create a server of my own?

Trans-Video.Net provides residential Internet access for a very modest fee and business access for a higher fee. We allocate our bandwidth on the basis of how residential and business users traditionally access Internet services. Servers consume a much higher chunk of this bandwidth -- a burden which, as with news, is unfair to require all users to shoulder. Individual servers also slow down access for your neighbors.

We will shortly provide 10MB of publicly accessible web space for each Trans-Video.Net account.

We encourage those who wish to run large web servers to contact dedicated web hosts. While getting set up for our new system, we used pair Networks, whose web services for 50MB of space begin at $5/month.

I have my own cable modem. Why doesn't it work?

It can! First of all, it must be a so-called "DOCSIS-compatible" cable modem. These include Surfboard SB4100 (the kind we provide), SB3100, Com21, and several others.

Most important, though, you must sign up as a Trans-Video.Net customer and Trans-Video.Net must know that your modem exists. We need the MAC address found on the modem itself, which you can provide to us when you sign up for Trans-Video.Net cable modem service.
