WEB SERVERS

Note: Trans-Video.Net does not support the use of any servers, including web servers, from your home computer. To create a website, you must use your Trans-Video web space. Please follow the instructions below.

Basic instructions on uploading your web page using Microsoft Internet Explorer (web browser):

  • Type ftp://trans-video.net/ into the URL bar (or click this link to our server). If you get "Page Cannot be Displayed," see the Trouble? section below.
  • Wait for the username/password box.
  • Enter the same username and password you use to check your email (your master account).
  • After you enter username and password, you will be brought to your home directory.
  • You will now see your "www" folder.
  • Click the "www" folder to open it.
  • Run Windows Explorer (usually on your desktop, under Start->Programs, or under Start->Programs->Accessories).
  • In Windows Explorer, browse to the folder where you have created your web page, images, etc., that are ready to upload.
  • Drag and drop your web page, images, etc., from Windows Explorer to Internet Explorer.

  • Check your work by opening a new window in Internet Explorer, and going to your Internet address: http://www.trans-video.net/~yourusernamehere/

Basic instructions on uploading your web page using an FTP (file transfer protocol) program:

    • Begin a session, and connect to our server named "trans-video.net".
    • The program will prompt you for your username and password.
    • Enter the same username and password you use to check your email (your master account).
    • After you enter username and password, you will be brought to your home directory.
    • You will now see your "www" subdirectory.
    • Change to the "www" subdirectory.
    • Upload your web pages and images into the "www" directory.
    • For later ease of use, you can add "www" to the remote directory path to your FTP program.
    • Check your work by opening a new window in Internet Explorer, and going to your Internet address: http://www.trans-video.net/~yourusernamehere/

If you do not have your own FTP program, we suggest WS_FTP LE (the free version) at http://www.ftpplanet.com/download.htm, WS_FTP (http://www.ipswitch.com/) or FTP Explorer (http://www.ftpx.com). Follow one of the links for more information and free trial downloads.

You web page is found at this Internet address: http://www.trans-video.net/~yourusernamehere/

    Important notes:

    • Be sure to copy your web page into the "www" subdirectory of your home directory on our servers.
    • Make sure your first web page is named "index.htm" or "index.html".
    • Trans-Video does not have Microsoft's Frontpage Extensions installed on our server.
    • When giving your web page address to friends, don't forget the tilde (~): http://www.trans-video.net/~yourusernamehere

    Trouble?

    Q: I can't log on. What's wrong?

A: Be sure you are connecting to trans-video.net and entering your correct master account username and password -- the ones you signed up for, and the ones you use to check email.

Q: I'm logged in using Internet Explorer. Now what?

A: Microsoft chose "drag and drop" to make FTP look like Windows. You must open Windows Explorer (where all the files are stored on your local computer), click to grab the files you want to upload, drag them to Internet Explorer (browser) windows, and drop them.

Q: I tried logging in using Internet Explorer and get "page cannot be displayed". Now what?

A: Logon by typing: "ftp://yourusernamehere@trans-video.net". Then continue with Internet Explorer instructions.

Q: But I use Netscape. How?

A: Logon by typing "ftp://yourusernamehere@trans-video.net". Then use "File|Upload" or drag-and-drop.

Q: My FTP program sometimes hangs when I'm uploading. Why?

A: Change to PASV mode. Look for it in your session's properties.
